As a counselor educator, I work from a Postmodern, Constructivist orientation to promote awareness of issues of diversity, oppression, multicultural competence, and wellness. I lean heavily on experiential learning in order to support adult learners' journeys toward becoming highly competent wellness providers.
Postmodernism supports a healthy skepticism of the status quo, while Constructivism encourages meaning-making in relation to new experiences. These paradigms, along with experiential learning strategies, encourage learners to engage meaningfully with material, make sense of it through their own worldviews, and overlay this new knowledge with existing perceptions to allow for a new way of "doing counseling."
